About Us
Dominic “Pop” Commodari was born in the small coastal town of loca Marina, Province of Calabria, Italy. Raised in a modest home in the village, he later married Maria Rosina Commodari (same last name, but no relation). Dominic and his wife immigrated to the United States, first settling in the coal mining region of Mount Carmel. Pennsylvania, where Pop worked laboriously in the coal mines. During the “Great Depression,” they made their way to a home in West Philadelphia. Pennsylvania and later worked for the government making uniforms for the War. Pop’s entrepreneurial spirit and work ethic did not go unnoticed. A gentleman who believed in Dominic’s industrious nature made him his first loan so he could bring his family to Kennett Square, PA (the “mushroom capitol of the world”). purchase forty-six acres and start his own family operated mushroom farm. Although working day into nights in the mushroom business, Dominic found time to nurture, grow and maintain a couple acre vegetable garden with tomatoes cucumbers, com, string beans and pumpkins to name a few. His garden would become a passion. He and Maria Rosina shared their labor of love with family, friends, and the community at large. They would travel into Philadelphia often to bring vegetables to everyone they knew. The latin verb for the name Commodari means “to accommodate.” Pop and Maria Rosina Commodari lived up to their name.
In their spirit we are now bringing locally grown produce “fresh to your neighborhood!”
